* We painted the nursery this weekend. We painted it yellow, and the windows blue. It looks great.

* Boston in the fall is beautiful, but today it went up to 80. It's supposed to be another mild winter. That's not right.

* Last weekend, we went apple picking. Apples right off the tree are freaking delicious, and make delicious pie. Also, apple sauce.

* Apparently there was some development with the baseball contest? Anyway, everyone in town is dressed in red.

* I've been reading Dr. Spock. It's a very good reference; it's clearly the standard for a reason. Having a child will be fun, I think.

McIntosh apples are in season now so when I saw some in Publix today, I had to get some. They are my favorite apple and are pretty much only sold a few months a year, as I don't think they store as well as other types of apples. But they are so good. I grew up with apple picking trips in North Andover. The ones today were from Ayer.

When we got to the orchard, we were surprised to find that it's kind of the end of the season for all apples. The harvest is from mid-August to mid-October, so we really got the last time they were in season. The McIntoshes we got from the tree were a little soft; really, the best of the season were the Macouns, which are huge and hella firm.

The farm was somewhere around Worchester.

I thought LiveJournal was the best place to get child-rearing advice...

Lj skews young. Like, 16-years-old young. So, there's that.

But 16 isn't too young to have children! And it's certainly not too young to have opinions about having children!

No, no it's not. That's the problem. Because while 16 is not too young to have opinions, it's much too young to have good opinions.

Yes, the Boston bases-ball fellows have advanced to the world series championship matches. It'll be the cat's pajamas.

How long until the baby arrives?

There's quite a storm amongst the Back-Bay hooligans. It seems they are in quite high spirits.

Allison just started her third trimester. It'll be about three months.

Have you guys been reading the "what to expect..." series? I think there are three, "when you're expecting", "the first year" and "the toddler years". One night when I was babysitting for Juliet I started reading the toddler one and I was startled by how sensible the advice was. It gave various perspectives too ("some experts say X, but others have argued Y") so you can get the whole picture.

Also, this post made me really happy and giddy for you. I'm glad you made it a public post because I know mom and dad will love it too.

Also, Joyce (juliet's mom) has this book called "The Two-Martini Playdate", which is about how to make time for yourself when you have a toddler. Not yet, but someday it might make a useful read for you guys.

Dora, you'll be a wonderful aunt.

Allison has read "what to expect when you're expecting." It's a best-seller, it was featured prominently in "Knocked Up," which had heavy ad placement in general, if you remember. I'm sticking with Dr. Spock for a while (it'll take me a while to get through, it's pretty damn big). One of the great features of Dr. Spock is that not only does he give perspectives, he is very reassuring: he is constantly reminding you that in general, your love and instincts are much more important than specifics like when you start him on solid food.

I glanced through "Three-Martini Playdate" in a bookstore. It was pretty damn clear it was not aimed at us.

We read it all, but the major advice we took pretty much all came from Dr. Spock. And look at what turned out!!

Also, he wrote several other books on narrower topics. The ones he "coauthored" or "authorized" didn't seem so useful to me, nor did the ones he wrote after, say 1970 or so. But the earlier ones were just as good as "Baby & Childcare".

I remember our taking his advice for lots of fresh air, during a bitterly cold day in NJ. We took our first kid from the car to the shopping mall, at maybe a week or two old, totally bundled up. Some random stranger screamed at us, but we knew to trust our instincts and get this kid out of the house.

Could you two get together on how many martinis?? I think I need to know.

The one I have is coauthored, and written more recently than 1970. Still, I find the advice helpful, and the tone comforting and supportive.

Three martinis. What, is your Google-arm broken?

I'm sure it's just an update of the terrific book, and still terrific. It's the books that were coauthored from scratch that I find less useful (even so, probably good, just not as).

I love yellow walls! My living room is a warm buttery yellow. Every little shadow creates a different shade of yellow.

The only book I read was Our Babies, Ourselves, which does a cross-cultural look at child-rearing to demonstrate what I really needed to know: they just want food, sleep, and comfort; people disagree wildly about how to achieve that. highly recommended if you want to geek out.

That's interesting! Unfortunately, I don't have much time for geeking out. I'm getting much the same message from Dr. Spock, which is nice.
